Eleanor Stewart holds an Environmental Studies degree from Mount Holyoke College, where she explored environmental issues through a feminist, intersectional, and anti-capitalist lens. Since then, she has worked as a small-scale, sustainability-focused farmer in both urban and rural settings, including a NYC rooftop farm and Stanton Home, a community farm supporting individuals with diverse abilities.
An advocate for underserved communities, Eleanor has worked at Community Access to the Arts (CATA) in Great Barrington, MA, and collaborated with activist-artist Gabrielle Senza on projects addressing visibility, identity, and systemic injustice. Most recently, she lived in Chicago, working with Blessings in a Backpack to provide food for children on weekends. Now, back in her hometown of Great Barrington, she seeks opportunities in sustainable agriculture, environmental activism, and the arts.
Her love for nature is deeply personal, shaped by hiking in her backyard and backpacking in places like Lake Placid, NY; the White Mountains, NH; Yosemite, CA; and the Redwoods, CA. She cherishes memories of exploring Florida and Cape Cod with her family, experiences that continue to inspire her creative work.
Eleanor is a queer, gender-fluid, and independent woman committed to self-love and mental health awareness. In 2019, she led a youth group at Railroad Street Youth Project to create Encompassing the Youth Experience, a mural reflecting the struggles of millennials and Gen Z. The project fostered empowerment and community and was displayed for years in the RSYP skatepark.
Her art reflects a love of animals, nature, and music while addressing climate change and late-stage capitalism. An idealist at heart, she believes in a better future fueled by radical hope.
Artist Statement:
I am an artist and an advocate for environmental and social justice. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas and paper, I paint through an activist lens, bridging environmentalism and social issues. My work celebrates the beauty and diversity of the natural world while inviting reflection on our connection to it and to each other.
Growing up in the Berkshire mountains, nature has always been central to my creativity. Music is also a major influence—I’ve painted portraits of my favorite R&B singers, many of whom focus on themes of self-love, kindness, and female empowerment. Through my art, I aim to inspire emotion, provoke thought, and spark conversations about our collective future.
