Artist Bio
I was born and raised in Pittsfield in 1949. I attended local schools and Berkshire Community College. After BCC I was accepted into the art program at Southeastern Mass University. I left Southeastern after a year for lack of funds. I joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and went on active duty. Discharged from active duty I worked various construction jobs before joining Pittsfield Fire Department. The working schedule allowed me time to commute to University of Massachusetts Amherst. There I studied with John Grillo who had studied with Hans Hofmann. Hofmann’s “push and pull” method of applying color and how color works together was emphasized by Grillo. In my paintings I lay down color always conscious of the reaction each color gives to the color around it. I work mostly in geometric abstraction which gives me some control over the outcome as opposed to a more expressionistic way of painting.
Besides painting I make assemblages and small sculptures.
